What Is The Art Of Cooking - Heritage Style?

Postby ForgetMeNots on Sat Oct 31, 2009 12:37 am

Throughout centuries of recorded history, food has played a leading role as a force behind many great events. This has included conferences, banquets, and dinners at other occassions where important decisions have been made.

So too, can food be used by every clever homemaker to influence persons and events which can enrich the happiness of a home and it's members. Good meals, attractively served, go a long way in keeping the family together.

I have, as one of my scrapping goals, creating a recipe book to leave for my children and grandchildren with the favorite family recipes. I would like to include recipes from my mother, my aunts, or other family members as well. I would also like to include recipes from my Mennonite Heritage which have been handed down from my great grandmother to granmother, mother to daughter to granddaughter by word of mouth. My mother-in-law, taught my daughter to make many of these traditional dishes, and she wrote out the recipes and the instructions for herself.

I would love for you to come on this adventure with me, where we create wonderful heritage cookbooks for our future generations throughout the coming year. We will follow a monthly format, and you can create as many pages as you want to include in your album in each catagory...make the cookbook your own.

Choose a size you would like to make your cookbook/ablum. Consider how you want to print the completed pages, and put the album together, or if you want to make it a purely digital album and not print it at all. Creating recipe cards in 4 by 6 format gives you the option of printing at home or at a photo printing place for a small cost per page. These can go into recipe file boxes or any photo album for 4 by 6 prints.

I am very excited about this challenge! Years ago my husband bought me a Recipe Scrapbook that I have spent many years filling and decorating. I am really looking forward to turning it into a digital format in hopes of having it printed!

When is this challenge starting? I need to start gathering ideas and all the recipes from my head!

I have been interested in making a scrapbook recipe book for a long time. Are we going to share our recipes?

We have not discussed the sharing of recipes in the challenge. Is this something you would want?

I'm definitely one for sharing recipes!! As a child, I use to sit by my Grandmother's bed for hours going over all her recipes in her box. When she passed away, my aunt made sure I got the recipe box. It was just an empty candy tin with her handwritten recipes in all disarray in there, but it meant the world to me. Even now, when I think about her, years later, that is one of the fondest memories about my grandmother that stays with me.

Would someone tell me how they print their recipe cards? I know it probably sounds stupid, it's just I've never done it. Do you actually print on a 4 x 6 recipe card, or a 4 x 6 index card? I thought maybe you make a layout with a 4 x 6 recipe card and then print it on a blank 4 x 6 index card?

I've always jotted down the recipes, but actually putting them on a "card" and putting that in my recipe box would be so nice.

Would someone explain how you do it to this I-don't-know-how-to-do-this person?

Thanks and hugs,
Marnie

I'm not sure how your printer is set up, but my printer came with print software and I can select multiple photos and choose what size to print them. If I select 4x6 it will print them all on 1 sheet. If your printer doesn't allow this option, you could open your software that you use to create the layout and arrange them all on one sheet and print them out on one sheet that way. Let me know if this doesn't or does work. I'll think of something else if need be.

I have a photosmart printer that actually can print borderless 4 by 6 so I can print on 4 by 6 cards or photo paper.
Or create an 8.5 by 11 inch blank document in your scrapping program.....drop your 4 by 6 cards onto it and print from there. and 8.5 by 11 will hold 2 cards across the page. or you can put 2 vertical and 1 horizontal and get 3 cards to sheet. Select good quality cardstock.....or upload the 4 by 6 cards to a print center and get them printed on photo paper and place them in an album which can hold 4 by 6 prints.
Hope that helps

Posting in gallery?

Postby LisasMom on Sun Nov 15, 2009 8:59 pm

Helene,

Since we are all so excited about getting the Vintage Kitchen collab and want to delve right into using it, is it ok with you if we post our recipes and layouts in the Art of Cooking gallery for the proper topic instead of the current month that we should be working on??? I will do the current month also, but I want to do some others also and don't want to throw your topic off by posting a bunch of other types of recipes!

My sister Terri, chaseweather, and I will be making a bunch of extra pages and recipe cards anyway. We are wanting to do at least one a week each so that we will have about 100 layouts with recipes and stories, and then the corresponding 6x4 recipe card for our recipe boxes. At least, that's the plan!! LOL

Thanks so much Helene for this challenge! I have been wanting to do this for years upon years!!! I just never had enough motivation to keep me going on it. Now, with you and Terri helping me, I might actually get it done! :D

Postby LisasMom on Mon Nov 16, 2009 8:07 pm

WOW!!!!!! Wow is all I can say about how this challenge has taken off!!! Helene, you were brilliant to get us all started! Now this is what I call fun! I can't believe all the different ways that people have taken off on this idea! I thought that I had been on the site off and on today but somehow missed a big bunch of postings until now! I was just overwhelmed with everything in the galleries!

I was going to my sister's house over Thanksgiving weekend to scrap and craft but with all the new ideas, I may have to stay the whole week!! And I see a few new faces too! It is all so inspiring and is really lighting a fire under me! New friends, new ideas, new kits!! What more could a body yearn fer!?!?!?
