Challenge #1 November 2009

Postby Victoria32 on Sat Oct 31, 2009 7:36 pm

Art Of Cooking - Heritage Style Challenge 1 - November 2009
I am so excited to be given the priviledge to host this challenge. I hope all of you will come on this journey to create a wonderful recipe book, heritage style for your children and grandchildren.

I found the following poem inside the cover of an old cookbook that my mother had. I will include it on the inside cover of my cookbook. I am going to be creating my cookbook doing 12 by 12 layouts. I will incorporate recipe cards onto the layouts. I will save the 4 by 6 recipe cards as png files, so I can print them seperately if I want to at a later date.

A Kitchen Prayer
Lord of all pots, and pans and things,
Since I've not time to be
A saint by doing lovely things
Or watching late with thee
Or dreaming in the dawning light
Or, storming heaven's gates.
Make me a Saint by getting meals
And washing up the plates.
Warm all my kitchen with Thy love
And light it with thy peace.
Forgive all my worrying,
Make all my grumbling cease.
Thou who did'st love to give men food
In room or by the sea,
Accept this service that I do, I do it unto Thee.

from THE KITCHEN
Chester Cathedral, England

Here is an outline of the Recipe Challenge Schedule.

Nov: Thanksgiving
December: Christmas, Hannukah
January Breads
Feb: Breakfasts
March: Lunches
April: Entree's
May: Salads
June: Desserts
July Barbeque, outdoor cooking
August. Canning, Preserving, etc
September. Cookies, cakes, squares
October: Soups
Nov: Appetizers, Beverages, misc

So let's started with Thanksgiving for November. This is a big occassion in the United Sates. Canada celebrated Thanksgiving in October, and we too have our favorite recipes for this.
For this challenge I would like us to focus on the recipes we have used for our Thanksgiving Dinners, be that the ones you remember from childhood at Grandma's house, and the ones which your Mother cooked for your family, and perhaps you now make for your own children and grandchildren.
Do you have a secret family recipe for turkey stuffing? Are there favorite vegetable dishes which are made each year? How about special salads or desserts? What recipes do you want to share with future generations?
You can create as many recipe layouts as you wish for the challenge. You can also include more than 1 recipe on the layout. You can include photos of the dishes (if you have some) or include family photos.
There are some wonderful new products in the Heritage Scrap Shop which will be prefect for our recipe books.

Oh, Victoria, may I come for dinner? Turkey and dressing is my favorite meal, always has been. My mom always asked my brother and me what we wanted for our birthday dinner. My choice was always turkey and dressing. I've never tried the stuffing inside the bird, but with your directions, I just may give this a try. Unless, of course, I'm coming to dinner...??

Come on over...bring the pineapple rice salad. We do turkey at thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter and Christmas in July. Our family all love turkey and stuffing.

You really do Christmas in July? That's neat. Tell me more about it. When I was teaching, one of the teachers would always have a Christmas in July party. We'd take small gifts to exchange and just have a nice get together. So, why does your family have Christmas in July?

If you like rice, the pineapple and rice is really a "good" dish. Ever since I was a child, everyone in the family insisted my aunt bring it to any gathering we had. That's how good it is!

What time did you say dinner was? I'm getting ready!!

Christmas in July started after I retired and had lots of time. We decorate a small tree with Christmas lights and ornaments. We cook a turkey dinner with all of the trimmings and exchange small gifts. It was a good excuse to cook a turkey in the summer.
Dinner will be at 6 pm. This way, we can enjoy the day, and have the food digested before bed time.
Our son doesn't like rice, but almost eerybody else does.

Christmas in July

Postby janmy3rs on Thu Nov 05, 2009 5:49 am

This is hilarious, I thought I was the only ones that did Christmas in July! Its been many years since I've done Christmas in July, but when my oldest was young it was almost as big as Christmas! We'd invite the entire family, parents, inlaws and siblings and it was also a great time to invite really close friends that normally wouldn't come in December because of their own family celebrations...it was a blast! A great excuse to have a family party in the summer! We even bought a fake tree when they went on sale just for this event. We'd dig out all the ornaments and the whole house was decorated in Christmas decor!! Normally we never put a mistletoe, but we always did for Christmas in July. Of course my parents thought I was nuts when I first told them what I was doing, made for some great conversation for people.

Maybe I should start doing this again...I could just see the kids faces now and the hubby. Coming home from work or school and I'm putting up a Christmas Tree. LOL I think they'd have me committed!

Well, Helene, now you've gone and started a small family feud here!!! My sister and I are both going to do this challenge and we both want to do our mother's Cranberry Salad!! So now what?!? I think I should do it because I'm doing Mom and our aunt for my Life Book project so it will fit in with that so nicely. But she thinks she should do it because she thought of it first! So, Miss Helene, how are you going to resolve this little spat??

hahahahaha!!!!! Good idea Marnie!! I AM the older of the two of us so I CLAIM IT!!! Do you hear that Terri?!?! I will be doing Mom's Cranberry Salad and Aunt Linda's Sour Cream Cake. You can find something else to do. How about Mom's Blueberry Torte?? That's a good one. Or her Seven Layer Cookies. Or Kathy's Cherry Cheesecake. Or Dad's Baked Beans. Or Mom's Pumpkin Pie. Or Aunt Linda's Potato Salad. Or Paul's Beer Can Chicken. You still have lots to choose from! hahahaha Love you, Sis!!

Hey girls, no need to fued.....you can make as many pages as you like for the challenge, and you can both do all of the recipes, after all, these are your cookbooks. Of course, if you don't duplicate the recipes, and each do different ones, you can do the cookbook in half the amount of work....or were you thinking we were sharing the recipe pages with everybody? like a recipe swap...where everybody does one page, and everybody gets a high resolution one to add to their cookbook?

Ok, I just talked to my sister and we decided that she can do the Cranberry Salad after all! I have tons more pictures than she does and I gave her the perfect photo for her page. I'm going over to our mom's house tomorrow to scan the recipe in mom's writing and then sending it to my sister to include on the page. It is going to be THE most perfect layout for us! I have quite a few others that I'll be doing so I gave in on this one. But, you know how they say to choose your battles.... bwhaaaaahahaaaa!! Watch out Terri! You owe me a win sometime soon!!!!

I am doing my recipes on 4 by 6 cards or 3.5 by 5 (whatever the cards in the kits are) and then adding them to the layouts. I am saving the png version of each card, so they would be easy to collect and print. I'm also putting the recipes as part of the journalling, and Marnie, you can copy and paste from there as well....no need to handwrite the recipes. Not everybody is including the actual recipe in the description box however.

Oh yes! I haven't gotten to get into the galleries much yet but I really hope everyone puts the actual recipe into the description; sometimes it is too hard to read them on the actual layout. Just copy and paste it from your layout into the description section when you upload your layout. That way everyone can clearly read the recipe and can copy and paste it into a Word document or their own layout. Remember though, to properly credit the source of the recipe if you do use it in another layout of your own.

Hi Mary...glad you are enjoying reading and seeing the recipes. Please feel free to join in and post some of your own. We would love to see them!

I am including several recipes on some of my LO's. but trying to remember to save a copy of the actual recipe card before I incorporate it into the LO.
If anybody wants to share these, we could upload the full high resolution version to our own downloading sites like 4 shared and then posting the link to the file in the thread, and members could download them from there.
I am posting my recipes in the LO description and they can be copied from there into a notepad or word document file.

Those are great recipes Jan. I love the cherry pie one.
Our daughter and her family were visiting on Sunday for lunch and in the afternoon we spent time going through my old cookbooks. What fun. I found some wonderful recipes which I will scrap in the comming challenges.
She has some from my mother-in-law, hand written, but in German, so she is going to bring them to translate. I may need your help Theresa on the translation.

Yes, Linda bring the potatoe casserole. I'm still looking for my veggie casserole recipe to scrap, as well as my "slow cooker" scalloped potatoes. I'm glad we have all month to do our recipes.

My sister (chaseweather) Terri and I are going to scrap this together but instead of each month, we hope to each make a layout each week. And we want to make the full 8x10 layouts for our Family Cookbook and Life Books but also we want to make the 6x4 cards too that we can print cheaply for ourselves, our mom and younger sister, and our aunts, cousins, and anyone else who wants them!!! That way we will have 104 layouts and 104 recipe cards at the end of the year! I guess we won't be hurting for Christmas presents next year!! hahahaha

I have wanted to do this for years! Now, with Helene's help in organizing the project, and Terri's help and encouragement to finish, I think I can actually do it!! Here is mine for the first week (I know, I'm behind a week already, yikes!):

These are great Vicki. What a wonderful plan tou and Teri have to complete the recipe book together. My daughter was visiting on Sunday and we were going through old recipe books and saved recipe cards. We had so much fun. She took home some and made some wonderful yeast buns using one of the reicpes. She said they were better than the Costco buns she was buying.

I agree what a wonderful idea!! You two are so fortunate to have each other to work on these projects together. I'm trying to get my cousin or my Aunt on board, but I need to train them on using the software first. LOL so maybe next year.

Great idea to involve the family Jan. My daughter made the comment that she makes copies of the recipes the family likes and is putting them aside to give to her children when they grow up and leave home.
Her 9 year old daughter loves cooking and helping in the kitchen as does 6 year old Nicholas. She lets them help with all of the baking...a real family project.
